Telegram has 950M+ users, but it\u2019s not WhatsApp or Signal. It takes a different approach to privacy. Some of it is strong. Some of it is misunderstood.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Here\u2019s the breakdown of how it actually works in 2026.<\/span><\/p>\n

  1. Two Types of Chats: Cloud vs. Secret<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    This is where most confusion starts.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

    – *Cloud Chats*: Your normal 1-on-1 and group chats. Telegram encrypts these in transit and stores them on <\/span>Telegram servers<\/span><\/a> The encryption is client-server\/server-client, not end-to-end. That means Telegram _can_ access the content if required by their policy. Benefit: You can log in from any device and see all history instantly.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

    – *Secret Chats*: True end-to-end encryption. Only you and the other person have the keys. No cloud backup. No forwarding. Messages can have self-destruct timers. If one person loses their device, the chat is gone.<\/span><\/p>\n

    *Key point*: By default, you\u2019re in Cloud Chats. You have to start a Secret Chat manually.<\/span><\/p>\n

    1. MTProto Protocol: Telegram\u2019s Own Encryption<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

      Telegram doesn\u2019t use Signal\u2019s protocol. It uses MTProto 2.0.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

      It combines AES-256 encryption, RSA 2048 for key exchange, and Diffie-Hellman for Secret Chats. Telegram says this makes it fast and secure for cloud sync.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

      Critics argue that because it\u2019s not open to independent audits as much as Signal, and because default chats aren\u2019t E2E, it\u2019s not \u201cgold standard\u201d for activists. Telegram argues MTProto is faster and scales better for groups of 200,000 people.<\/span><\/p>\n

      Telegram gives users more control over privacy than most messaging apps, especially with features like Secret Chats, self-destruct timers, and username-only logins. While it\u2019s built for fast, large-scale communication, many students and professionals also use it to share resources and prep materials.       1. *l<\/span>Minimal Data Collection<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

        Telegram\u2019s privacy policy states it collects:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

        – *Phone number* for signup\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

        – *Contacts* if you allow sync\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

        – *IP address + device info* for security and spam prevention\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

        It says it does _not_ store message content from Cloud Chats in a readable form long-term, and it doesn\u2019t sell or share data with advertisers. There are no ads in private chats.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

        Your phone number is not shown by default. You can use a username instead.<\/span><\/p>\n

        1. Server Locations + Data Requests<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

          Telegram\u2019s servers are distributed globally. The company is based in Dubai since 2017.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

          Telegram publishes transparency reports. It says it will only disclose IP addresses and phone numbers to authorities if there\u2019s a court order for terrorism cases. For general Cloud Chat content, Telegram states it does not hand over message data because it doesn\u2019t store the decryption keys.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

          For Secret Chats, Telegram has no access at all.<\/span><\/p>\n

          1. Extra Privacy Tools Built In<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

            Beyond encryption, Telegram gives users control:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

            – *No message forwarding* in Secret Chats\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

            2. *Default chats are not E2E*: If you need activist-level security, use Secret Chats or Signal.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
            3. *Cloud backups*: Cloud Chats are synced across devices, so they live on Telegram\u2019s servers.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

              *The Bottom Line*\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

              Telegram\u2019s privacy model is \u201cflexibility first, E2E second.\u201d You get speed, huge groups, and multi-device sync because Cloud Chats are server-encrypted. If you need maximum secrecy, you must opt into Secret Chats.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
